Friends, it’s been quite a week for us. Releasing a record is a time of great excitement and great vulnerability. Thankfully, we’ve been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from those of you who have given the album an advance listen. And for those of you with the willpower to resist the temptation until now, well: here’s your reward.
In making a record that reflects upon and asks questions of the past, we’ve really made a record that turns its gaze to the present moment. Today. Right now. After all, every decision you’ve ever made in your life has led to this. Reading this sentence on a screen, wherever you are. Sitting at the breakfast table with your morning cup of coffee. On your phone, waiting in line for the subway. On your work computer. In bed, lights out, your face dimly lit by the faint glow of an electronic device.
What have you learned? What would you have done differently? Where will you go from here?
Of course, we’re asking ourselves these questions too. Because after all, it’s also a record about the future. Looking forwards and backwards simultaneously, from summer to autumn. We only get to do this once.
This is what we do. And this is what we’re going to keep doing. We’re so ready to play these songs for you. Thank you for the opportunity to do so. Thank you for taking the next step with us. This isn’t our record anymore: it’s yours. Thank you for today.
Here for you always, Death Cab for Cutie.
