Happy to share that Ben’s full-length cover version of Teenage Fanclub’s classic 1991 album, ‘Bandwagonesque’, is out now! Listen to “The Concept” premiered by NPR Music here.
The album is available digitally following its limited edition release as part of Turntable Kitchen’s “SOUNDS DELICIOUS” monthly vinyl subscription service. The vinyl also includes an exclusive bonus 7″ vinyl including covers of Alex Chilton’s “Free Again” and Beat Happenings’ “Bad Seeds,” both of which were covered by Teenage Fanclub on a 7” vinyl released shortly after their release of ‘Bandwagonesque’ in 1992.
We’re very excited to announce a very special show next month in Seattle: an acoustic evening with our friends The Decemberists and Sera Cahoone. All proceeds from this event will be going directly to the ACLU Nationwide & Planned Parenthood organizations. Tickets are on sale this Friday, May 12th, at 10am PT here.
“We as Death Cab For Cutie are appalled by the divisive, xenophobic and misogynistic agenda the Trump Administration is attempting to implement in our country. We are proud to be joining our friends The Decemberists and Sera Cahoone in support of both the ACLU and Planned Parenthood at this pivotal time in our nation’s history.” – Benjamin Gibbard
“There are enough stories from this last week alone — the Trump administration’s attempts to curtail first amendment protections and the GOP’s passage of the heartless AHCA — to remind us that organizations like Planned Parenthood and the ACLU need our support now more than ever. We Decemberists are proud to do our bit to help those orgs stay funded and active in their communities, both local and nationwide. RESIST!” – Colin Meloy of The Decemberists

Please visit waterprotectorlegal.org for more information. Ben will be performing solo and the evening will also feature a reading by author Sherman Alexie and performance by singer/songwriter Naomi Wachira.
I arranged this benefit because I was appalled by Donald Trump’s executive order to reinstate construction on the Dakota Access Pipeline. I believe water is more precious than oil and thoroughly support the right of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe to defend both their land and sovereign treaty rights. All proceeds from this show will go to the Water Protector Legal Collective who continue to provide legal support for Native activists and their allies throughout this ongoing fight for justice.
Tickets on sale tomorrow at 10am PT here.
Every Thursday, we will release a tour from the vault on the online store. Each poster will be limited in quantity and available for one week only.

Watch the video to a timely new song “Million Dollar Loan” made for 30 Days, 30 Songs. Directed by Simian Design.
Million Dollar Loan is the result of a collaboration/arrangement process we as DCFC have never attempted before. After writing the song I recorded only acoustic guitars and vocals. I then sent these tracks to Dave, Zac, Nick and Jason. I gave them instructions to write, record and send back parts for MDL with the caveat that no one was allowed to hear what the others were doing. Upon receiving everyone’s work I was really amazed at how well everything worked together and arranged the song accordingly.
Lyrically, Million Dollar Loan deals with a particularly tone deaf moment in Donald Trump’s ascent to the Republican nomination. While campaigning in New Hampshire last year he attempted to cast himself as a self-made man by claiming he built his fortune with just a “small loan of million dollars” from his father. Not only has this statement been proven to be wildly untrue, he was so flippant about it. Like it was no big deal. It truly disgusted me. I remember thinking, “surely THIS will be the turning point. To refer to an amount of money most working class people will never see in their lifetime as ‘small’ illustrates a shocking lack of perspective. Assuredly now everyone will see this man for the charlatan he truly is.” And yet, here we are.
Donald Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that he is unworthy of the honor and responsibility of being President of The United States of America and in no way, shape or form represents what America truly stands for. He is beneath us. On November 8th we Americans must show ourselves and the world we are BETTER than this. – Ben

Death Cab for Cutie performed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night. Watch the clip below.
We, Death Cab for Cutie and Chvrches are deeply saddened by the recent passage of North Carolina’s hateful and dangerous House Bill 2 (aka, HB2 or the “bathroom law.”). We are appalled by how Governor Pat McCrory and his conservative cronies have stoked the flames of fear around an undocumented, non-issue (i.e., sexual predators posing as transgender for the purpose of molesting children) as a way to not only discriminate against transgender persons but also to undermine the constitutional rights of North Carolina’s entire LGBT community. This nefarious brand of bigotry is embarrassing for the state of North Carolina and has no place in this great nation.
Since the passage of this horrific legislation, we have been deliberating as to what to do about our show together in Charlotte on June 16th as well as Death Cab for Cutie’s show in Asheville on June 11th. While we whole-heartedly support the decisions of our contemporaries to cancel their upcoming appearances in political protest, we have decided to honor our commitments and play. These shows will now be staged as benefits for two terrific North Carolina based organizations, Freedom Center for Social Justice and Southerners On New Ground (SONG), whom we admire for their tireless defense of LGBT rights in the state of North Carolina. We will not be taking a single dime from these shows. All profits will be donated to these important organizations.
“We have absolutely loved playing in North Carolina over the past 17 years,” says Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard, “Not only have the crowds always been amazing but we have met so many wonderful people who remain friends to this day. Not to mention that the music of Chapel Hill’s Superchunk, Archers of Loaf and countless others have been integral to the ethos and sound of our band. And so it is with a heavy heart that we announce these shows in Asheville and Charlotte will be our last in North Carolina as long as HB2 stands. We sincerely hope we won’t have to wait long to come back”.
“We are incredibly distressed by HB2 and all that has been happening in North Carolina, but are also heartened to hear about so many people fighting to create positive change,” stated Chvrches’ Lauren Mayberry. “I know that our fans will join us and Death Cab in promoting equality, empathy and understanding between people, and we are proud to be supporting Freedom Center for Social Justice and Southerners On New Ground at this show.
“We know that all of us have a role to play in creating a world free from fear where attacks like HB2 are no longer feasible,” says Elias Lyles of Southerners On New Ground. “Death Cab for Cutie and Chvrches are acting in solidarity by using their concerts in North Carolina to lift up the voices and work of southern LGBTQ people of color, immigrants, and working class folks.”
If you are not able to attend the shows but are interested in donating to these organizations, you can do so here:
About The Organizations:
Freedom Center for Social Justice: Through established programs and initiatives that counter the effects of poverty and all forms of oppression, the Freedom Center for Social Justice addresses social, economic and other justice needs within the LGBTQ community, helping to create true culture change within communities, businesses, organizations and institutions that serve and connect to some of the most marginalized.
Southerners On New Ground: Southerners On New Ground (SONG) is a regional Queer Liberation organization made up of people of color, immigrants, undocumented people, people with disabilities, working class and rural and small town, LGBTQ people in the South. We believe that we are bound together by a shared desire for ourselves, each other, and our communities to survive and thrive. We believe that Community Organizing is the best way for us to build collective power and transform the South. Out of this belief we are committed to building freedom movements rooted in southern traditions like community organizing, political education, storytelling, music, breaking bread, resistance, humor, performance, critical thinking, and celebration.

Ben sat down with Cuepoint to discuss the science of songwriting, being a music fan and more in this recent interview.
“… a friend of mine once stated, which was, “You know, being a writer of any kind of discipline is kind of like being a magician. You’re defying the laws of physics.” There’s nothing there. And then there’s something there. That defies the first law of physics. So, in that sense, maybe there is something spiritual about the process of writing, in general, but having gone through all of the longer periods of writer’s block and unsuccessful writing, I subscribe more to the philosophy that “inspiration likes to find you hard at work” more than “you are just a vessel for some kind of cosmic transference of music that, if you’re in the right place at the right time, it’s beamed down to you.” – Ben

Rolling Stone sat down with Death Cab for Cutie to discuss the reveal of their highly-anticipated eighth studio album, Kintsugi.
“The album’s called Kintsugi,” bassist Nick Harmer says. “t’s a Japanese style of art where they take fractured, broken ceramics and put them back together with very obvious, real gold. It’s making the repair of an object a visual part of its history. That resonated with us as a philosophy, and it connected to a lot of what we were going through, both professionally and personally.”
Read more on the band’s new album Kintsugi here.
Stereogum: “…pieces are being collected over on the DCFC website and, while not all of them are up yet, we do have some full lines from the new song available: ‘There is a desert veiled in pavement and there’s a city of seven hills and all our debris flows to the ocean to meet you again, I hope it will’ and ‘There is a role of a lifetime and there’s a song to be sung.’ Watch the full thing come together right here.

Each LP includes an MP3 download code and is presented with its original artwork.
The reissue of Death Cab for Cutie’s debut, You Can Play These Songs With Chords, returns the album to its original format – cassette. This reissue includes an MP3 download code and artwork replicated from both versions of the original cassette release, along with new liner notes from Elsinor’s Joe Chilcote. More information here.
